7-zip allows for compression of large and small files, to be sent over a network or the Internet or for storage to save space.

7-zip allows users to reduce the size of files and folders, and offers compression in some of the most popular compression methods, including LZMA (Lempel–Ziv–Markov chain algorithm), LZMA2, PPMd (Prediction by partial matching) and bzip2.

Each offers different types of compression based on the type of data you wish to compress.

Other features include the ability to split files into pre-set sizes, In particular 650/700meg for CDs, 4480meg for DVDs and 1.2meg for Floppy disks. At the same time allows for you to set custom sizes.

7-zip uses the AESA-256 bit encryption method, so users can add passwords to their archives.

I found this software required some more advance knowledge in order to use, the average user would be better with software like Winrar or Winzip , However for the more experience user this is a very powerful tool and used right can offer about 25% better compression then the others.

Although this can vary widely on the type of file you are compressing and the method you choose to do so.

For me this is the only piece of compression software I need to make and open archives.
