The free AVG Anti-Virus is a good virus protection program with a lot of useful functions.
It has a combined anti-virus and anti-malware engine, a link-scanner, and e-mail scanning.
With its scheduling utility you can automate both scans and updates and the new scan optimization speeds up the scanning. If your system is seriously infected and doesn’t work properly anymore, AVG lets you create a rescue disk that scans your computer in MS-DOS mode.
However, the complete scan still isn’t very fast and significantly taxes your system, but for a free tool it’s pretty convincing.
