Audacity is a simple yet impressive digital editing and recording software. It can be used for recording lives sounds from a microphone or taking audio from a CD. If you have old tapes or records with the right equipment you can also use audacity to convert your collection of music into digital format. With this version your iTunes tracks can also be dragged and dropped directly into Audacity.
Audacity is in my opinion the best free-ware recording and editing program available. One of my favourite things about audacity Is that there is a official Wiki page with an online manual that tells you how to do everything you can with the software. There are lots of add-ons and plug-ins to enhance the program and one of the best is the LAME encoder which when run with audacity you can export your completed project to mp3. Also there is a lot of built in effects which come with audacity including compressor, equalization, normalizer,limiters, high and low pass filters, and lots more. You can additionally built up a collection of plug-ins, audacity supports, LADSPA Plug-ins, Nyquist Plug-ins and VST effect Plug-ins.
All in all Audacity is an incredible free and open source program for recording and editing sound. Although it does not have all the features of paid music software. It is not going to cost you anything, unlike the hundreds you would spend on alternative programs and it can still can perform simple to more advanced recording and editing tasks.
