HijackThis scans your computer and generates a log file which helps you to identify if something has been tampered with.
HijackThis is a free software utility that generates an in depth report of registry and system settings by scanning your Windows computer. The resulting log file can be examined by experienced users or web-forum helpers to determine what may have infected your PC. HijackThis makes no separation between safe and unsafe settings in its scan results. Expert users are provided the ability to selectively remove items from your PC, such as malicious or unwanted software. In addition to this scan and remove capability HijackThis comes with several tools useful in manually removing malware from a computer.
A common practice for novice users is to generate a HijackThis log file and submit it one of the many web-forums devoted to helping people fix their computers by using HijackThis. Experts at these forums provide information on which items are causing your problems and how to remove them safely from your computer.

HighjackThis v.2.0.4 scans your pc and generates a log file of registry and file settings commonly manipulated by malware as well as good software.
I first came across this a while back but was never really a big fan of this program as it has potential to cause greater harm then good. This is due to the nature of the program itself.
What happens when you run the program? Well the program will run a scan of the most commonly known malware settings within the registry and running processes. Once completed a log file is produced and then you are given options in which to handle each of the running processes and registry settings.
Now this is where the untrained user can completely damage their windows operating system to a point it is unrepairable, as there program does not show if the running process is in fact infected with malware but simply that the process is running.
If you know what you are doing with this tool then it is indeed a good way to remove threats, however it is not for the average user.
