History of Microsoft Windows 98

On June 25th 1998 Microsoft released windows 98 the first Windows operating system to be designed for the consumer. Windows 98 was to be the final version of Windows to be based on MS-DOS. The presentation for windows 98 brought about one of the most famous bill gates moments, when during the presentation windows 98 does the infamous blue screen of death.

Although windows 98 was not the best version of windows every released there was many new feature which would be the starting point for many new technologies and software applications. The introduction of Universal serial bus devices or USB devices for short, lead to a more truly plug and play environment. Windows 98 also saw the introduction of the quick launch bar.

In 1999 Windows 98 second edition was release and brought about fixes for many of the known bugs found in the original release of windows and made the operating more stable and many believe Windows 98 second edition to be the most stable version of the windows 9x family.

Second edition also saw the introduction of internet connection sharing which meant several computers could have an Internet access using the same Internet connection.
