On September 14 2000 Microsoft released windows Me and would be the last of the windows 9x series.
Windows Me was design solely for the home computing market. with introduction to many new feature including system restore and windows movie maker. Updated version of many program such as Internet explorer, windows media player as well as an new graphical interface where also included in Windows Me.
In order to speed up boot times Microsoft made restrictions to real mode MS-DOS, this was a very unpopular change made by Microsoft as many programs needed real mode to run. However windows Me could be booted into real mode dos using a boot-able floppy disk.
Windows Me saw the introduction to system restore this was initially meant to be a recovery system should the installation of a program or driver in some way reduce the stability of the windows Me, system restore could be used to roll back to a previous working state. System restore does not however back up files and folders and therefore was not suitable as a back up program.
The other major problem with Windows system restore was that if any Malware was installed on the previous restore point then the malware would also be restored.

Compressed folders where also included in windows ME, this feature had first been introduced in the windows 98 plus pack, this meant that .Zip files could be extracted and created without the need for external programs such as winzip and winrar .
