Total Commander is a file manager replacement that offers multiple language support, search, file comparison, directory synchronization, quick view panel with bitmap display, ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR, UC2, TAR, GZ, CAB, ACE archive handling plus plugins, built-in FTP client with FXP, HTTP proxy support, and more.
Without doubt, Total Commander is a more powerful explorer tool than the Windows standard explorer and it is free to download.

Total commander is a windows file manager similar to the windows explorer with the exception of two fixed windows side by side making it easier to manage files within a windows based environment.
The software looks out-dated but this should not foul you the software is up to date and the looks are giving it classic windows 3.1 feel to it. There is a build in command line which makes it easy for those who have experience with command line entries in order to have more options when copying over the standard windows copy and paste.
The software include additional options to connect via ftp or make a URL connection both options run at a relatively fast speed but this as with all internet connections can vary depending on the connection speed of the server/host.
The ability to rename multiple files quickly is a nice feature of Total commander this lets you rename a large amount of files under set parameters. The other features included in Total commander include a folder sync tool which lets you sync folders over the internet or a LAN. As well as the quick extraction tool which lets you select multiple archives (with supported types for pkzip, arj. Lha, rar, uc2 and ace) and extract them quickly and easily.
Overall this is a decent program giving more option then the basic of windows explorer and yet offering the simplicity of dos command line. As this is shareware you get to use the program for a full 30 days after which a license is needed to continue using the program which cost about £30 which is not a bad price for a personal licence which includes free updates for a limited time. The makers do not state the length of this time all they say is free updates (until further notice).
