avast! Free Antivirus
Avast Antivirus FreeEdition is a free anti-virus package with professional equipment.

Avast! Antivirus' kernel tracks not only common viruses, but also provides good detection rates for Trojans. You can start scanning operations from the user interface by hand or look for scan results and adjust settings - such as the intensity of the test. The latter should always be "high".

Stop annoying spam, shop safely online and protect your personal data with Avast! Antivirus Free.

Avast Free Anti-Virus is one of the best free-anti virus software on the market. With its user-friendly interface, users have access to detailed information and options needed for maintaining a virus free computer.

The Avast interface gives users simple to use options including, showing the summary of the current status, statistic of all of the activity of Avast.

Different scan options including the Boot-time scan which allows Avast to load before Windows and prevents any potential malware from activating and giving Avast the ability to clean any infected systems before any long term damage is done.

Real-time Shields which allows Avast Free Anti-Virus to scan in real time any files stored on the system, scan incoming mails, scan internet web sites as they load and eliminates any online threats, along with many more. This make Avast's real-time shields a core component to this software and ensures that your system maintain is safe and secure.

One additional feature I liked of this free anti-virus software is the sandbox mode which allows the software to run any potentially dangerous software and run them within Avast to determine if there is any threats to the security of your system.

As a free anti-virus program this is a first class choice. Virus definitions are constantly updated. The performance of Avast has been greatly improved over the years, with the latest version having good detection rates and having light usage on system resources.

avast! automatic update (to version 7.0.1407)

Reviewer: reviewer - View all of My Reviews

After installation of the latest avast! automatic update (to version 7.0.1407) the following has been observed:

1) avast! "cloud services" features have been silently automatically enabled.

According to avast: "FileRep lets you know whether a file is safe before you open it – determined in part by how many people have the file and how new the file is"...

So, it seems that when this feature is enabled, avast! servers will collect information about every file that is on the users computer!
This both a security and a privacy leak!

Such features should only be enabled after the user explicitly opts-in, and after he has been informed of how it works and which information (in detail) is transmitted/shared.

2) avast! WebRep add-on got installed (silently, without giving any choice or information about it) on both Internet Explorer and Firefox.

These add-ons aparently communicates the address of every page you view in your browser to avast! servers (thus allowing them to collect a full history of the users browsing, including security and privacy relevant addresses such as those of e-banking...).

Conclusion:

Most users will not be aware of these new security and privacy leaks. Considering these will automatically affect millions of users (through the automatic update) these issues can be considered as severe.

one of the best free antivirus

Reviewer: blcky - View all of My Reviews

very reliable, quiet and not harrassing. I've tried several free and paid antiviruses, avast is the only one that actually protected
