How To: Adjust Audio Settings using Camfrog Video Chat
Camfrog is a unique video chat client that offers a number of interesting features which bring it to the top of the pile. Its biggest draw is the ability for any Camfrog user to create and host their own video chat room, with its own theme and participants - a bit like creating your own video chat party.
Camfrog also offers file sharing functionality, snapshotting (sending still images taken from the webcam) and support for Windows Mobile and the iPhone. These combined features make it a popular tool for video conversations over the internet.
One of the biggest issues users have when using Camfrog is that chat buddies cannot hear them speaking properly. This is almost always due to the microphone not being configured properly in the Camfrog settings. Sometimes, conversely, the microphone is set too high and speech is transmitted too loud and with a lot of distortion. This guide shows you how to set the audio preferences in Camfrog, to fix both of these issues.
Launch Camfrog using the desktop shortcut or entry within the Windows Start Menu (or if Camfrog is already running then double click the system tray icon). The interface will appear, showing your list of online/offline contacts.
Click the Actions option on the top menu of the Camfrog interface, then choose Settings near the bottom of the menu overlay that appears. The Camfrog Settings dialog is displayed.
In the left hand options tree, click Audio.
In the Record panel, use the dropdown to select the recording device for capturing audio (such as your voice). Many PCs have two audio components capable of capturing audio - the primary sound card, which will be better quality, and an onboard sound card, which is lower quality and used as a fallback if the primary sound card fails. Ensure the correct device is selected here, and if you are unsure, contact your hardware supplier.
Set the volume of recording to about halfway using the slider.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the Playback settings, selecting the same audio device as in step 4 and setting the volume to about halfway. Now you know how to adjust the audio settings, you can come back and tweak either the record or playback volume later if necessary.
Click OK and test your new settings by initiating a video chat with a contact. Check the volume of their output sound (e.g. talking or background music) is within normal levels and ask them for feedback on how loud your own transmitted sounds are. Run through this guide again if you need to make any further adjustments.
Tips & Advice
- Always ensure you have the latest drivers installed for your PC sound card, to get the best performance from applications that output or capture sound.
- You can download the latest sound card drivers from the website of the sound card manufacturer. Contact your hardware supplier if you are unsure what sound card is installed in your computer.
