How To: Speed Up Web Browsing with CProxy

How To: Speed Up Web Browsing with CProxy

Web acceleration is a concept that utilises compression technology to reduce bandwidth, and thus response times, for clients browsing the internet. The client connects to the internet via a proxy server, which captures the complete data of each web page accessed and generates a compressed version of it - which is then sent to the client browser. Images are reduced in quality, not always noticeably so, which makes the web page much faster to load. Many mobile operators adopt this technology to reduce bandwidth consumption on their networks, from users with handsets or 3G USB modems.

It is also possible to benefit from this technology on a desktop PC. If your internet connection is particularly slow, or you just want to make it even faster, there are web acceleration clients available that should be able to speed things up, with the caveat that some web pages will be slightly reduced in visual quality.

One such tool for Windows is CProxy. Our guide shows you how to use this web acceleration tool to significantly speed up your web browsing.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • 1

Access the related download link for this article and click the Download Now option to get the installer for CProxy. Run the file to install the application on your computer and follow the on-screen prompts.

  • 2

After installation, CProxy begins running automatically and its blue application icon is visible in the system tray area. Right click the icon and choose Show to begin configuring CProxy.

  • 3

In the Preferences menu, locate the Account area. Here, you can choose to use an anonymous account for demo purposes (this is recommended whilst you are evaluating the product), or enter your registered CProxy account details. If you wish to register, click here and complete the registration process. If you wish to register later, just select the Anonymous Account option.

  • 4

Click Automatic Setup. CProxy has already detected your network connections, and these are shown in a list. Select the connection you wish to apply acceleration to using CProxy. This will normally be your standard LAN connection, but it depends on how your home network is setup.

  • 5

If you use Internet Explorer, CProxy will automatically configure the browser proxy settings for you. If you use any other browser, you must configure it manually to work with CProxy. Open the browser settings menu and locate the Proxies option, then set the HTTP proxy to the address 127.0.0.1, port 3128 and SOCKS4 proxy to the address 127.0.0.1, port 9000.

  • 6

Click OK to close the CProxy configuration. Using the browser and network connection you specified during setup, you should now experience much faster surfing possibilities. Try accessing a site in your favourites that you know to be image and media heavy, and see if it loads faster than before.

Tips & Advice

  • CProxy provides additional options for combatting the pesky banner ads that clog up the internet. In the Settings menu, choose Acceleration Level. Here you can check the boxes to block GIF banners of certain dimensions. Once blocked, the GIF banners will no longer be downloaded when you access a site, so you will save bandwidth and further reduce page loading times. Check all the various size checkboxes if you wish to disable GIF banners of all types.
  • Additionally, check the Block Following Ad-Servers Content box and Disable FLASH Multimedia Content boxes to make your pages even lighter and faster loading.
  • Click Apply and OK to apply the settings.
