How To Turn Off Norton 360

How To Turn Off Norton 360

Norton 360 is a heavyweight application that provides comprehensive protection of Windows systems through the employment of antivirus, firewall, antimalware, and backup contingency components. Because it is so comprehensive, it can at times be a drain on system resources, and there is a risk of conflict when installing new applications.

For both reasons, at times you might wish to temporarily disable all Norton 360’s security features, until such time as it is convenient to re-launch it.

Follow the steps below to learn how to painlessly disable the application and free up some resource for other purposes.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • 1

If Norton 360 is currently running, there should be a tray icon on the right hand side of the taskbar. Right-click the icon to launch the Norton 360 control panel.

  • 2

The Norton 360 control panel displays a summary of the components that are currently active and providing protection to your computer. Uncheck the boxes forFirewall and Auto Protect.

  • 3

It is possible to automatically re-enable Norton 360 protection after a specified period of time, which is useful – it is easy to forgot to switch it back on. After the Firewall and Auto Protect boxes are unchecked, a prompt appears requesting you to select a time frame.

  • 4

Close the Norton 360 control panel.

Tips & Advice

  •  If you chose Forever when disabling Norton 360, the application will not re-activate protection automatically – you must do this manually, when you are ready. Follow these steps:

    • Even with Norton 360 protection disabled, the application continues to run in memory. Locate the tray icon on the right hand side of the taskbar and right-click to launch the Norton 360 control panel.

    • Select the Change Advanced Settings and click Virus & Spyware Protection Settings.

    • Check the Turn on Auto-Protect and Firewall boxes. Norton 360 Protection immediately resumes.
  • Norton also has an email scanning component that automatically checks every incoming and outgoing transmission in applications such as Microsoft Outlook. However, this can notoriously increase the length of time it takes to send and receive large emails, especially those with big attachments. And, if you use web-based mail, then there is no need to have it running at all.
    To disable the Norton 360 email scanner, follow these steps;

    • Locate the tray icon on the right hand side of the taskbar and right-click to launch the Norton 360 control panel.

    • Select the Change Advanced Settings and click Virus & Spyware Protection Settings.

    • Locate Turn on Email Check and click to un-tick the box. The email scanning component of Norton 360 is halted. To reactivate it later, repeat the above process.
