QIP lets you chat with your buddies on ICQ and AIM without annoying pop-ups and features a cool selection of emoticons.
 
QIP works like every other instant messenger letting you manage your contacts and online status, but also provides a number of extra features including a tabbed window; which is something that is missing from the likes of MSN and Yahoo messenger.  Win Amp users can show there buddies what music they are listening to through the personal message tab. One thing that sets QIP apart is that you can select your own ‘skins’ which are available from the QIP website, there are lots to choose from, like a cool black one to cuddly teddy bears.  Ideal for when you want to give it a bit of individuality. QIP also has a rather cool selection of emoticons that come as standard. 
 
What makes this a more appealing alternative to ICQ is that fact that there are no annoying adverts and pop ups.  You can also filter spam so you can monitor who is trying to chat with you, letting you accept or reject individuals or users from a certain URL.
 
QIP is fairly easy to setup if you are an existing ICQ or AIM user, but can be a bit daunting if you are not.
 
As a multi messenger service it is fairly limited, with only two independent message services supported, unlike the likes of Trillian, which supports 9 messenger services, including ICQ and AIM.
