In Pictures: The GIMP features

For keen photographers, The GIMP provides all of the retouching tools you need to help get the most out of your image. You can adjust brightness and contrast, remove colours that are too dominant and attempt to sharpen blurry photos. All of the tools allow you to preview your changes before applying them to the image.

For the digital painters out there, there’s a wide selection of brushes to build up your artwork, and even more tools to modify and change your image. Blurring, smudging, airbrushing, adding text. It’s all possible. On top of this, the GIMP is full of transformation tools and filters to enhance your image and really is a comprehensive package.

If you have used a basic painting or photo program before and are looking for something more powerful, The GIMP can cater for your needs too. It supports levels and channels, has an image format converter and huge range of plug-ins such as artistic lighting effects or advanced sharpening tools.

One of the few negatives of The GIMP worth mentioning is the interface. Each image, tool or modifier you work with opens itself in a new window, and there is never an all-encompassing application window to keep everything nicely organised. This could mean you easily find yourself in a clutter with half a dozen windows open at once, all overlaying each other. That said, as you become familiar with the tool you can take advantage of The GIMP’s tabbed windows and customise the layout to fit your desktop.

Unfortunately, the installation process is also a little annoying, requiring you to install a program called, GTK+ Runtime Environment (Download now) before the main application will work. Beyond this minor hurdle however, lies and incredibly fully featured imaging tool.

It’s hard to fault The GIMP in too many other areas. Definitely give The GIMP a try and enjoy the immense amount of work the developers have put into making a free imaging tool that is comparable to its expensive competitors.
